What Is Ovulation?

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from one of the ovaries. It occurs once per menstrual cycle, typically around 14 days before your next expected period. After release, the egg travels down the fallopian tube, where it can be fertilized by sperm. This brief window — roughly 12 to 24 hours — is when pregnancy is possible through direct egg fertilization.

However, your fertile window is actually 5–6 days wide, because sperm can survive inside the reproductive tract for up to 5 days, waiting for the egg.

When Does Ovulation Occur?

Ovulation timing depends on your cycle length. The luteal phase (from ovulation to the next period) is relatively constant at ~14 days. This means ovulation occurs approximately 14 days before your next period — not necessarily on Day 14 of your cycle.

Signs and Symptoms of Ovulation

1. Changes in Cervical Mucus

The most reliable natural sign. As ovulation approaches, vaginal discharge becomes clearer, more slippery, and stretchy — resembling raw egg whites. This "egg-white cervical mucus" (EWCM) helps sperm travel to the egg.

2. Mild Pelvic Pain (Mittelschmerz)

About 20% of people feel a twinge or ache on one side of the lower abdomen around ovulation. This pain, called mittelschmerz (German for "middle pain"), is caused by the follicle rupturing.

3. Increased Basal Body Temperature (BBT)

BBT rises by about 0.2–0.5°C (0.4–1.0°F) after ovulation due to progesterone. Tracking BBT every morning before getting out of bed reveals a pattern that confirms ovulation occurred. Note: BBT rise confirms ovulation in retrospect — it's not a predictor.

4. LH Surge Detected by Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs)

OPKs detect the surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) that triggers egg release, typically 24–36 hours before ovulation. A positive OPK is your best predictive signal.

5. Breast Tenderness

Rising estrogen and LH around ovulation can cause mild breast sensitivity.

6. Heightened Senses and Libido

Research shows that some women experience improved mood, increased energy, and heightened libido around ovulation — an evolutionary adaptation to encourage reproduction.

7. Light Spotting

Some people notice very light spotting (ovulation bleeding) when the follicle ruptures. This is normal and not a cause for concern.

Your Fertile Window Explained

The fertile window spans approximately 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. The highest probability of conception is the 2–3 days immediately before and including ovulation day.

Factors That Can Disrupt Ovulation

  • PCOS — Polycystic Ovary Syndrome causes irregular or absent ovulation
  • Thyroid disorders — Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism affect ovulation
  • Extreme stress — Cortisol can suppress LH and delay ovulation
  • Significant weight changes — Very low or very high BMI disrupts hormonal signaling
  • Intense exercise — Excessive training can suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis
  • Breastfeeding — Prolactin suppresses ovulation (lactational amenorrhea)

How to Use PeriodTracker to Track Ovulation

PeriodTracker automatically calculates your estimated ovulation date and fertile window based on your cycle history. To get the most accurate predictions:

  1. Log at least 3 consecutive cycles with start and end dates
  2. Record cervical mucus observations daily
  3. Enable fertile window reminders in your profile settings
  4. Check the Calendar view to see your fertile window highlighted

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get pregnant if I have sex during my period?

While unlikely, it's technically possible if you have a short cycle and ovulate early. Sperm can survive up to 5 days, so if your period lasts 7 days and ovulation occurs on Day 10, there's a small chance of conception.

Why didn't I ovulate this cycle?

Anovulatory cycles (cycles without ovulation) are common and can happen due to stress, illness, hormonal changes, or medication. One anovulatory cycle is usually not concerning. Multiple consecutive anovulatory cycles warrant medical evaluation.

Can I use period tracking apps as birth control?

Apps alone are not reliable contraception. The Fertility Awareness Method, when practiced with proper training and additional observations, has an 88–99% effectiveness rate with perfect use — but typical use failure rates are higher. Consult your gynecologist for contraceptive counseling.
